...at scent workshop in 2013 with SDDA's founder Barbara Brown and SDDA Judge Jean-Marc Dugas.  Razamataz and I paid close attention and then passed our D.O.T. (Designated Odour Test). We were hooked!

Continuing Education

In order to provide quality instruction, Cindy participates in continuing education from many top instructors in the sport from around the globe. All methods taught are positive and  science-based. Each dog and handler team are unique and need to be taught as individuals and Cindy recognizes and encourages just that.

The Business

Basics and Beyond Dog Training is an independent canine training business located within Halifax Regional Municipality, Nova Scotia. which first came about in 2009 with positive based classes in impulse control and rally obedience.  After much research, education and mentoring, Basics and Beyond Canine Skills was re-established with a new-found focus in scent detection, offering popular in-person group classes.

Because of such high demand for in-person classes and COVID-19 restrictions, Remote with Basics and Beyond was created to help others to enjoy nose work with their dog from the comfort and safety of their home.

You can find us on SDDA's website as a local trainer. Cindy can be found on CKC's Judge's Directory
and on CDSA's Trial Official's Directory.

What students are saying:

Cindy is a wonderful instructor who is passionate about dogs and the world of scent detection. She puts a lot of detail into planning her classes, providing fun activities and appropriately challenging  experiences for both her 2-legged and 4-legged students. Cindy has the ability to zero in on what each of her students needs to be successful, while providing both encouraging and valuable feedback. No two classes are ever the same as she uses her knowledge and experience in different approaches to scent work tasks. Whether you are a complete beginner or more advanced in the sport of scent detection, Cindy helps to guide you in meeting the goals you set for yourself and your canine companion.

Thank you, Basics and Beyond! Thanks to Cindy for introducing me and my young, somewhat excitable phobic border collie to the world of scent sports! I was training my boy for a life of agility, but was having difficulty with getting him to focus for more than a nano second! Then Cindy suggested that maybe a more low-key activity would help my boy gain some confidence and focus, and of course she was right! He loves going to his class and Cindy is so understanding and calm with her instruction for this “I need no excuse to jump all over you and give you kisses” boy. He now still gets excited coming through the door for his class, but when it is his turn to find the scent, he is a happy border collie with a job to do and to heck with all the other distractions. I mean he even leaves those sooo tempting toys alone! We love our new sport and what it has done to help him with his other high impact excitable sport of agility. He has come a long way thanks to Cindy and her expertise in the world of sport dog scent detection, and of course her knowledgeable calm demeanor for getting the best out of my young guy.

I have a 12 year old Toy Manchester Terrier, Drew. I didn’t start her in scent detection until she was 10 and my only regret is that we didn’t start sooner! Drew is a bit of a slow learner but Cindy has been so patient with us and has done a great job teaching me how to work with Drew so she understands what we’re trying to do. We both love it and have so much fun doing it together! It’s super mentally stimulating which is just what I wanted for my senior dog. It’s great to see the progress from when we first started to where we are now. Highly recommend Cindy’s scent training!
